LOS ANGELES, Nov. 30 - Over Sunday dinner at his home last20

spring, Martin Sheen, the star of "The West Wing," casually20

mentioned to his wife, Janet, and son Emilio Estevez that he20

had been lobbying members of the Los Angeles school board20

to proceed with the demolition of the old Ambassador Hotel,20

where Senator Robert F. Kennedy was assassinated in 196820

on the night he won the California presidential primary.

Dec. 1, 2005 | Every Nov. 22 we are haunted by the unquiet20

ghost of John F. Kennedy, and last week's anniversary of his20

assassination was no exception. As usual, none of the flurry20

of press reports taking note of the mournful occasion shed20

any new light on what remains the greatest unsolved20

mystery of the 20th century. The national dialogue about the20

case remains stuck where Oliver Stone's explosive 1991 film20

"JFK" and Gerald Posner's bestselling 1993 rebuttal, "Case20

Closed," left it. Stone's dark dream, peopled by sinister20

government officials and demons from the underworld, had20

the virtue of channeling the deepest fears of the American20

public, a consistent majority of which continues to believe20

JFK was the victim of a conspiracy. Posner's book, which20

mounted a game defense of the lone gunman theory in the20

face of a growing body of contrary evidence, had the virtue20

of simplicity and calming reassurance.20

</P><P>

Though you wouldn't know it from following the media20

coverage, there have been new developments in the case20

during the past dozen years -- many of them sparked by the20

thousands of once secret documents released by the20

government as a result of the furor around Stone's film.20

(Millions of other pages remain bottled up in agencies like20

the CIA, in defiance of the 1992 JFK Assassination Records20

Collection Act.) Some of this recently unearthed information20

is now beginning to appear in new books, including "Ultimate20

Sacrifice," this year's most highly touted JFK assassination20

book.</P>

in Frederick, MD and the author of the new book, Breach of20

Trust: How the Warren Commission Failed the Nation and20

Why (University Press of Kansas). The following article was20

drawn from his book.

After forty years the93who94 and93why94 of Dallas longs for an20

answer that cannot be given definitively and responsibly. A20

clear explanation was made impossible by the official20

conspiracy to see to it that there could be no other answer as20

soon as it was known that Lee Harvey Oswald, then the only20

suspect in the crime, had been assassinated and there would20

be no trial. Since there was no good-faith effort to20

investigate JFK92s murder, there are few leads from the20

official evidence that the private researcher can use as a20

basis for solving the crime.
